Writer's Block PDF Print E-mail
Everyone gets blocked when they write- it's true!

And I consider myself a writer. Well, when it comes to writing in this blog, it feels like I am already blocked. It's not that I don't want to write in it, it's just coming up with the subject matter that gets me.

There are so many subjects I want to write about, so that's not the problem. The problem is that I wrestle with the choice of topic because I want to be sure that I am accomplishing my goals. I want to write a book eventually and it seems logical that the more I get out of my head and into the computer in places such as this blog- I will be on my way to compiling a book. Sounds easy right? Well, apparently for me it is not. I want to write for myself and I also want to write for my clients. So, here I sit.

I honestly have no idea how I became a writer. As a child I don't recall being an avid writer. I didn't journal or keep a diary. I don't recall loving to put my words on paper in college, although I did always like getting to the point and being done with it. Perhaps that is why I am good at the web content writing. But I digress....

I guess what I am getting at is that even the best of us get plagued down by writing. The only way I can see to get around that is to just start writing. Start getting it out of your head and onto paper. Soon enough you will be typing away, just like I am here, and you will feel much more focused on saying what you have to say. If you get real stuck- walk away, call a friend or just start talking aloud about what you "think" you want or need to say. Once you get the words on the paper, regardless of how polished it is, go ahead and let it sit for a bit. Then you can go back to it and fix it up as you see fit. I can't tell you how many times I have walked away only to come back to the page in amazement that I actually wrote it. It's funny how it feels like one thing when you are writing it, but it feels completely different when you go back to re-read.  I think the reason is this: When you are compiling a written piece and you are getting it all out, the stuff that is finding its way to the page is coming from the heart, from a passionate place or from the excitement (sometimes anger) that you feel at the time. You are focused on getting all of that information in and it's that motivation behind the words that creates the body of content.

Hmmm..I think that is another topic all together.....see how this works?

Well, before I start to feel silly here and start droning, I will leave you with this. Just do the old brain dump when you are stuck! It doesn't matter how you do it either- outlines, running dialogue, letters, bullet points, whatever works for you. There- I did it. I am not sure if I helped anyone but myself, but I did it.

Now go and have a Fabulous Day!
